A female giraffes pregnancy will last 400-460 days usually 15 months. Usually there is only one calf born. The mother giraffe will give birth to the calf while standing. The calf will come out head and front legs first. The mother will groom the newborn, cleaning it from the sac. She will then help the calf to stand up. The newborn is born to be 6ft, 1.8m tall. After only a few hours of birth the calf can walk and run around. The mother giraffes will usually group up in a nursing herd that consist of mothers, and calves.Mother giraffes will build a friendship with each other. They will often leave their calves with other mothers, while they browse or drink somewhere else. This is known as "calving pools". The mother giraffes are very over protective of their young. The male giraffes dont usually have much of a part in the nursing of their young. |
